Translating LogicMail

LogicMail is fully internationalized, and can be made to support any language available on the BlackBerry platform. This page serves to explain what translations currently exist, and how to add new ones.

Translator Requirements

What does it take to be a translator for an application like this? Its really pretty straightforward, though ideally you would meet some of these criteria:

  • Familiar with the technical terms used in E-Mail clients between US English and your native language
  • Able to edit a text file in Unicode (any modern graphical text editor should do)
  • Willing to maintain your translation as LogicMail is updated
  • Able to test your translation in the application (optional, but desired)

How does internationalization work?

LogicMail is internationalized like any other BlackBerry application. What that means is that there is an "rrh" file that defines a number of constants, and a collection of "rrc" files that define those constants for all supported languages. At runtime, the BlackBerry picks the "rrc" data that best matches the language selected in the device configuration. If you look at a LogicMail source tree, you will see the following files of interest:

/trunk/LogicMail/res/org/logicprobe/LogicMail/

LogicMail.rrhTranslation constants
LogicMail.rrcBase (English) translation
LogicMail_XX.rrcTranslation for language XX (i.e. de, nl, etc.)

How do I make a translation?

Without any special tools

  • Get the latest version of the  LogicMail.rrc file. (Please click the "Original Format" link at the bottom of the page, if downloading from the web.)
  • Make a copy called "LogicMail_XX.rrc", where the "XX" is the  2-letter code for your language.
  • Edit the LogicMail_XX.rrc file with a text editor, replacing all the English strings accordingly.
  • E-Mail the resulting file to me: octo@logicprobe.org

Using the full development environment

  • Configure your development environment as described here.
  • Configure the simulator to support your language
    • Navigate to the directory where the simulator is installed, for example:
      • C:\...\eclipse\plugins\net.rim.eide.componentpack4.5.0_4.5.0.14\components\simulator
      • C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 4.2.1\simulator
    • Edit the XML file for the simulator you are using (i.e. "8300.xml")
    • Add a line for your language as described  here:
      • i.e. <Application>net.rim.blackberry.lang.XX</Application> for language XX
      • You can see what languages your simulator can do by looking at the language codes on the "cod" files in the "Java" subdirectory.
    • Save the file
  • Add a file for your translation in Eclipse
    • Expand the LogicMail project, and the "org.logicprobe.LogicMail" package
    • Right-click on the "org.logicprobe.LogicMail" package, and select "New --> Other..."
    • Select "BlackBerry --> BlackBerry Resource File" and click Next
    • Navigate to (and select) the path: "LogicMail/src/org/logicprobe/LogicMail"
    • Type in the filename "LogicMail_XX.rrc", where the "XX" is the  2-letter code for your language.
    • Click Finish
  • Edit the translation
    • Double-click on "LogicMail_rrh" in the "org.logicprobe.LogicMail" package.
    • You will now see the Resource Editor, which starts on the Root locale (English), and has tabs for all the languages that "rrc" files exist for. This can be used to fill in strings for your language.
  • Test the translation
    • Run LogicMail in the simulator, as described on the development page.
    • In the BlackBerry Options screen, select the language you are translating to.
    • Run LogicMail, and see your translated strings in action.
  • Submit your translation
    • E-Mail the new "LogicMail_XX.rrc" file to me: dkonigsberg@logicprobe.org

Frequently Asked Questions

Someone else already submitted a translation for my language. Can I still help?

Absolutely! Since I am only fluent in US English, I need people to review the translations. Ideally, I want at least 2 maintainers for each language to ensure quality. So feel free to grab the translation for your language, and review for any issues (no matter how minor) you find with it. I've even created the a special ticket category for translation issues.
